A PIECE OF STAR TREK HISTORY

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew travel back to 1980s San Francisco aboard a captured Klingon Bird-of-Prey, humorously renamed the HMS Bounty. Their mission: recover two humpback whales whose unique ability to communicate may be the key to saving Earth from a mysterious alien probe.

Far from Starfleet and operating aboard a captured Klingon vessel, Kirk and his crew are forced to make use of whatever equipment they can find. Among their makeshift arsenal is the compact and distinctive weapon fans have come to know as the Klingon Hand Phaser.

Unlike the elaborate weapons normally associated with Star Trek, the Hand Phaser was assembled from found components and model-kit parts, giving it a wonderfully improvised character. Both hero and stunt versions were created for the film, and the weapon features in two memorable moments — first when Chekov inadvertently leaves one behind during his escape from Federal custody, and later when Kirk uses one to melt a lock and trap the surgical team treating the injured Chekov.

THE REPLICA

Factory Entertainment was fortunate to briefly own one of the original Klingon Hand Phaser props from the production. The original was carefully examined and digitally 3D scanned by the Factory Entertainment team, providing an exceptionally accurate foundation for the replica.

Constructed from resin and ABS components, the replica faithfully captures the unusual proportions, details and character of the original filming prop. Integrated light and sound effects recreate its distinctive on-screen appearance, including effects that were originally added during post-production.

A wonderfully unconventional piece of Star Trek prop history, the Klingon Hand Phaser is a reminder that some of the most memorable screen-used props are also the most unexpected.

Each Klingon Had Phaser replica is presented in a wooden display case and includes a Certificate of Authenticity and sequentially numbered metal edition plaque.

Klingon Communicator Details

Standard issue equipment for warriors of the Klingon Empire, these communicators were seen throughout Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, most memorably during the tense negotiations between the Klingons and the crew of the Enterprise.

The original screen-used props were cast in resin and finished with a heavily weathered, battle-worn appearance. Three were produced for filming, and Factory Entertainment is fortunate to own one of those original prop communicators. Our “hero” prop is the example most frequently seen on screen, including the dramatic confrontation on the Genesis Planet that precedes the death of David Marcus.

Using detailed 3D scanning, we have recreated this prop with exceptional accuracy. Like the original, the replica is cast in resin and hand-painted, but for improved durability the distinctive top fins have been upgraded to metal while preserving the authentic on-screen look.

Limited to just 500 pieces, each replica is presented in an attractive wooden display case and includes a numbered metal plaque and a certificate of authenticity.
